Welcome to Marcus Schutenko:

The Chinese Museum is excited to announce the appointment of its new CEO Marcus Schutenko, who is joining the Museum after an extensive career in the cultural sector.

Marcus joins the Museum from the Arts Centre, Melbourne, where he was the Manager of Programming Resources. He has formerly been the General Manager of The Store Room, and was one of the company's three Directors. Marcus was a founder of, and former Chairperson of, The Dog Theatre. Marcus has been a regular performance judge at the Melbourne Fringe.

Marcus has worked at all three levels of government in the arts and cultural sector, including roles at the Department of Communications, IT and the Arts, Arts Victoria and the Victorian Multicultural Commission. He has worked with many of Victoria's Chinese community organisations through his role at the Victorian Multicultural Commission. Marcus received a Public Service Australia Day Award for his work on the development of the National Museum of Australia. In Canberra he was seconded to the National Film and Sound Archive to conduct a review of their Access Branch.

Marcus has completed a Masters in Public Policy and Management at The University of Melbourne, where he focused his studies on cultural policy and program delivery. In 2008 he received an Asialink Residency to work with the Arts Council of Mongolia.

Marcus takes over from Lucy Tan, who had returned to the Museum from retirement as the acting CEO while the Museum sought an ongoing appointment. The Chinese Museum welcomes Marcus, and looks forward to working with him.

Our Volunteers - February 2012

Elaine started volunteering with us in early 2011 and has recently left the Museum to take up a graduate program position in Canberra. She says of her experience at the Museum, 'My understanding of curatorship and the museum field has definitely benefited through volunteering. In particular, I learnt much about the intricacies involved in acquiring, cataloguing, maintaining, and storing museum collections. By volunteering at a small museum, I was additionally exposed to the various roles and processes required to run a museum. I was also pleased to learn more about the history of the Chinese-Australian community in Australia, from the various leagues that were formed to the large number of Chinese restaurants open all around Australia!'

The Chinese Museum runs with the assistance of a valued team of volunteers. Depending on expertise, volunteers have the opportunity to work as guides, in exhibition preparation, visitor services and administration. If you are interested in applying to volunteer with the Museum, please contact Emily Cheah on 9662 2888.
