Past Public Program: Sunday 27 June 2021

The fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar is the Dragon Boat Festival, a day to remember the patriotic poet Qu Yuan.

Join us FREE on Sunday 27th June 2021, to celebrate the Dragon Boat festival.  Admission into the whole Museum is free and there will be family oriented Dragon Boat activities happening in the Museum and in Chinatown throughout the day. 

1 hour program to take place on the hour, every hour 10am-3pm. 

Hear the legendary story of Qu Yuan 

Qu Yuan (c. 340–278 BC) was a Chinese poet and statesman who lived during the Warring States Period in China. People make zongzi (steamed rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo or reed leaf) and hold dragon boat races in memory of him.

Learn how zongzi is made

Only eaten during this Festival, the Chinese Youth Society of Melbourne (CYSM) will provide rice dumpling making lessons, a Chinese custom to be passed down from generation to generation.

Also, there is an exhibition on the festival, Qu Yuan poetry and more festivities in Chinatown.

With your free admission you can also visit all 5 floors of the Chinese Museum, including our One Million Stories exhibition that features the diverse backgrounds and characteristics of Chinese-Australians past and present.
