Mid-Autumn Festival Schools Program

Dates: Term 3: 5 Sept - 16 Sept & Term 4: 3 Oct – 13 Oct 2022

Duration: 2 hours or 3 hours

Cost: $17.50 per student for 2-hour program (minimum 15 students) 

         $26.50 per student for 3-hour program (minimum 15 students)

The Mid-Autumn Festival is a 3000-year-old tradition that occurs when the full moon appears largest in the sky. Celebrating family re-union, this festival program explores moon legends and traditional practices such as lantern making, riddle guessing, moon cake making and the Chinese tea ceremony. 

Two-hour program includes: Moon cake demonstration, Lantern making workshop, Moon legend stories and riddles, and a demonstration of the Chinese tea ceremony. 

Three-hour program includes: A fully guided Museum Tour in addition to Moon cake demonstration, Lantern making workshop, Moon legend stories and riddles, and a demonstration of the Chinese tea ceremony. 

Victorian Curriculum: Visual Arts Levels 3-10; History Levels 3-10; Intercultural Capability Levels 3-10; Languages (Chinese) Levels 3-10; Specifically: History / Levels 3 and 4 / Historical Knowledge / Community, remembrance and celebrations.

    The Chinese Museum’s building, located in the heart of Chinatown, was built by the Cohen Bros. in 1890 and used originally as a furniture warehouse. It was acquired in 1984 by the Victorian State Government to enable the establishment of a Museum to provide the heritage and cultural foundation for Melbourne’s Chinatown.
