Mid-Autumn Festival

Dates: Term 3: 6 Sept - 17 Sept & Term 4: 4 Oct – 29 Oct 2021

Duration: 2 hours

Cost: $17.50 per student (minimum 15 students)

The Mid-Autumn Festival is a 3000-year-old tradition when the full moon appears largest in the sky. Celebrating family re-union, this festival program explores moon legends and traditional practices such as lantern making, riddle guessing, moon cake making and Chinese tea ceremony.

Two-hour tour includes: Moon cake demonstration, Lantern making, Moon legend stories and Museum tour.

Victorian Curriculum: Visual Arts Levels 3-10; History Levels 3-10; Intercultural Capability Levels 3-10; Languages (Chinese) Levels 3-10; Specifically: History / Levels 3 and 4 / Historical Knowledge / Community, remembrance and celebrations.

    In this workshop, students discover how Chinese knots began as communication tools and evolved into an intricate folk-art form.

    Lantern Making

    Students will make a colourful paper lantern and learn about the significance and history of lantern making in China.

  • Chinese Paper Cutting

    Chinese Paper Cutting

    Students will make their own knotted bracelet or charm for good luck.

  • Discover Chinese Characters

    Discover Chinese Characters

    Students will learn about the origins of Chinese as a language of pictograms, and write their own name.

  • Chinese Ink Painting

    Chinese Ink Painting

    Students will create a painting using a brush dipped in black or coloured inks, usually on paper or silk.
