Artist's Insights: Tony Ayres

As part of The Arts Collective’s Artist’s Insights series of talks, Tony Ayres will speak at the Museum of Chinese Australian History on Sunday, October 30th from 2-3pm.

Tony Ayres is a prolific writer, director and producer of television and feature films. His feature directing debut, Walking on Water, won five AFI Awards and the Berlinale’s Teddy Award in 2002. His second feature, The Home Song Stories, premiered also in Berlin and went on to win eight AFI Awards. His third feature Cut Snake, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2014.

Tony is one of the founding members of Matchbox Pictures, and his credits as an executive producer include Wanted, Glitch, The Family Law, Old School and The Devil’s Playground. Tony also executive produced Nowhere Boys, which won the AACTA for Best Children’s Television Series. He directed its telemovie spinoff Nowhere Boys: The Book of Shadows, released in cinemas in 2016. Tony has been the producer of miniseries such as Barracuda and Seven Types of Ambiguity.

Tony’s other television credits include The Slap, Underground: The Julian Assange Story, The Straits and Saved. His latest projects as a showrunner include Clickbait for Netflix and Fires.

Tony Ayres is a highly significant creative practitioner on both the Australian and international stages; on Sunday he will speak about his journey and his practice as a Chinese Australian filmmaker.
