A popular traditional art form, Chinese fans symbolise wisdom and gracefulness.

In this workshop, students will learn about the history of Chinese fans and make their own fans from lucky red packets.

Designed for Year 1 to Year 4, students will learn about the history of Chinese fans and make their own fans from lucky red packets.

A surcharge of $100 per 10km applies to schools further than 30km from the Museum

We can cater for up to 300 students in one day for 3-session incursion. Activities are run on a rotating roster.

Duration

All sessions are 45 minutes long. The total program is 3 hours approx., including breaks.

On the 17 February 2024 there was a major fire at the heritage listed See Yup Temple in South Melbourne.

Chinese Ribbon Dance and Movement Workshop

In this workshop, a trained Chinese dance instructor will teach students basic traditional Chinese dance and movement in your own school/institution as part of our Travelling Museum Program.
Dragon Puppet Workshop

Due to popular demand, our Dragon Puppet Workshop will now be available as an incursion as a part of our Travelling Museum Program.
Lion Dance

Students will dance and learn about the significance of lions in Chinese culture and celebrations.
Kung Fu Workshops

A brief introduction to Kung Fu which aims to achieve physical, mental and spiritual harmony. Includes basic anti-bully and stranger danger techniques.
Chinese Knotting

Students will make their own knotted bracelet or charm for good luck.
Chinese Paper Cutting

Students will create a decorative paper cut and learn about the cultural significance of this practice in Chinese festivals and celebrations.
Lantern Making

Students will learn about the significance and history of lanterns, and make their own.

OUR ORGANISATION

The Chinese Museum’s building, located in the heart of Chinatown, was built by the Cohen Bros. in 1890 and used originally as a furniture warehouse. It was acquired in 1984 by the Victorian State Government to enable the establishment of a Museum to provide the heritage and cultural foundation for Melbourne’s Chinatown.
VENUE HIRE

The Chinese Museum has multiple galleries / space for hire, suitable for exhibitions, parties, dinners, talks and many other functions. All proceeds from venue hires go towards furthering our mission of communicating the Chinese-Australian story and promoting multiculturalism
